WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES:
Support to individuals who are terminally ill through visitation and by providing companionship while at home, at the hospital, residential care facilities or at the Douglas Fir Hospice, Cottonwoods. Volunteers will become a friendly visitor to sit and listen, to talk with, to help with some practical tasks such as helping with errands, doctors appointments, playing board games or cards, walk the dog, go out for a stroll or a cup of coffee, or perhaps to provide respite for caregivers etc.
Vigil Service is provided when an individual has hours to days to live. Hospice will provide a bedside sitting service throughout the night with volunteers who work 4 hour shifts. This service is provided to relieve family members through the night so that they can sleep knowing that someone is with their loved one. It also supports individuals so that they don't have to die alone.
Bereavement Counseling is offered to individuals, families and children through qualified counselors. We also provide visitation by hospice volunteers who have been trained in bereavement support.
An Adult Grief Program is held twice yearly in different areas of the Central Okanagan. The organization partners with other residential care facilities to provide support. Groups are 6 weeks in length and are facilitated by trained Hospice Volunteers. The groups are inter-active, self directed and run at their own pace. Participants meet with facilitators in advance to assess needs and expectations.
Children's "Good Grief" Camp is offered twice a year (Oct & May) for children ages 7 - 12. This is a day camp and is held on a weekend. This camp encourages children to explore their grief in a healing atmosphere of trust and support. Facilitated by a Professional Counselor and experienced volunteers with the option of individual support when needed. Preliminary interview with parent and child is required.
An extensive resource library on "death & dying" and "grief & loss" is available for borrowing books, audio tapes and videos.
